Captain Wagner walked up to me and just stood there, watching me, for a few moments. He was rigged out in all his gold braid and captain's uniform, holding his jacket together. I smiled and said, "hello Captain." He just stood there, looking me in the eye. Then, slowly, he opened his jacket wide, flashing me. Underneath his Captain's jacket he was wearing a t-shirt, the one with Wiley Coyote strangling the Roadrunner. In his deep commanding voice he said, "beep, beep," turned and walked away. Having worked on the Belle and the Delta Queen, and on the original crews of the Natchez IX and the Mississippi Queen, I've had more than my share of Steamboat Moments, but that one will always stand out. I pray Congress comes through with the exemption this time. I would really miss the Queen, and all the friends I made there. It was truly one of the best times of my life.
