It was my first day as a deckhand on the Delta Queen, and I was sweeping the head of the second deck. Captain Wagner walked up to me and just stood there, watching me, for a few moments. He was rigged out in all his gold braid and captain's uniform, holding his jacket together.

I smiled and said, "hello Captain." He just stood there, looking me in the eye. Then, slowly, he opened his jacket wide, flashing me.

Underneath his Captain's jacket he was wearing a t-shirt, the one with Wiley Coyote strangling the Roadrunner. In his deep commanding voice he said, "beep, beep," turned and walked away.

Having worked on the Belle and the Delta Queen, and on the original crews of the Natchez IX and the Mississippi Queen, I've had more than my share of Steamboat Moments, but that one will always stand out.

I pray Congress comes through with the exemption this time. I would really miss the Queen, and all the friends I made there. It was truly one of the best times of my life.

Robert, the Delta Queen actually has a modern sprinkler system. It's the same type also used on the American Queen. Please check http://deltaqueen.wordpress.com/deltaqueensafety/ for a full list of the Delta Queen's safety features.

Save the delta Queen if everyone is so worried about fire add more on board fire stations with hoses and add a sprinkler system. You can pump the water right from river a endless supply of water better than a lot of smaller communities
